Options to Travel from Pompeii to Mount Vesuvius

By organized tour:
This is by far the most convenient option, as it includes transportation, admission to Mount Vesuvius, and a guided tour of both Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. Tours typically depart from Pompeii in the morning and last for around 6-7 hours.

By public transportation:
It is possible to get from Pompeii to Mount Vesuvius by public transportation, but it is a bit more time-consuming than taking a tour. First, take the Circumvesuviana train from Pompeii Scavi station to Ercolano Scavi station (about 15 minutes).
Then, from Ercolano Scavi, take the Vesuvio Express bus to Vesuvius National Park (about 30 minutes). The bus stop is located about 50m outside of the train station. Note that the Vesuvio Express only runs during the summer months, from April to October 31st. During the off season you can take a local bus or taxi from the train station (around 10-15 minutes).

By car:
If you’re renting a car, driving is the most flexible option. It takes about 30 minutes to drive from Pompeii to Mount Vesuvius, and there is a large parking lot at the summit of the volcano.
